Avatiu Causes Upset

Puaikura’s Jarves Aperau clears the ball away from Titikaveka’s Nuku Mokoroa

Avatiu who is at the bottom for the take, has caused one of the biggest upsets thus far in the Tower Insurance Premiership, when played against Nikao Sokattak on Saturday.

Both teams came out to CIFA Complex hungry for success, a match with the first half left with a nil all score was then uplifted in the second half, after Nikao’s Toru Mateariki scored through the keeper in the first few minutes of the match, from there the game elevated and Avatiu’s Aaron Simpson took the opportunity to equalize the playing fields, when scoring from a penalty inside the box 20 minutes after. Using a free kick outside of the box given in the last few minutes of the game, Avatiu’s Tini Maruhi placed the ball straight into the goal with a header securing their 2-1 triumph over Nikao Sokattak.

Meanwhile at Titikaveka Field, Titikaveka and Puaikura were in equal skill in their match. Puaikura’s Jarves Aperau along with his backline, held strong and prevented many attempts at goal from the boots of Titikaveka strikers Nuku Mokoroa and Joseph Tuaputa. But alas the Titikaveka side wasn’t done with Puaikura yet.

As the second half went underway Titikaveka given the chance at a penalty kick inside the box, wasted no time putting the ball through to the back of the net, after a while of contesting for the ball Titikaveka then winning the ball on Puaikura’s end, broke through the hard at work defensive line securing their final 2 nil score.

Tupapa Maraerenga men’s team, who played Matavera in this week mid-week match came away with a 4 goals to 2 score.

In the Islander Hotel Senior Women’s division, the Avatiu Women’s team walked off the pitch with a victory against Nikao. The beginning of the match saw both teams struggling to put goals away and the game was at an almost standstill as the first half came to an end. But a slip up in the Nikao defense was an opportunity seized by the Avatiu team who managed to sink in a goal in the few last minutes of the game, from the boots of young Anzia Tere.

Titikaveka and Puaikura senior women’s match ended in a 1 all draw, while on Thursday Tupapa Maraerenga won against Matavera with a goal scored in the first half, ending with 1 nil to Tupapa.
