The 2024 CIFA Knockouts continued to deliver exceptional football action, bringing together the best teams from all divisions for an unforgettable week of competition. From the youngest grassroots players to the senior Premier Men’s and Women’s teams, every match was packed with excitement, passion, and drama. Four penalty shootouts at Takitumu Field added a thrilling element to the tournament, but it wasn’t just there where the action took place. Temurimotia Park also hosted intense matches, where teams battled just as fiercely, even without the shootout drama.
The grassroots divisions (U8, U10, and U12 mixed teams) took center stage with young players showcasing their potential and determination. Though no penalty shootouts were needed in these divisions, the energy and enthusiasm from the kids were undeniable. Coaches, parents, and spectators cheered on as these future football stars continued to hone their skills. Congratulations to all the teams who participated — the next generation of talent is looking brighter than ever!
The Premier Men’s match between Avatiu FC and Nikao Sokattak was one of the most intense games of the week. Avatiu FC, sitting comfortably in 3rd place, were the favourites going into the match, but Nikao Sokattak had other ideas. After Avatiu FC took an early lead, hopes were high that they could finish the match strong. However, Nikao Sokattak rallied, equalizing and then going on to take a 3-2 lead, forcing the match into a 3-3 draw by the final whistle. The shootout saw Nikao Sokattak emerge victorious with a 4-1 scoreline, securing their spot in the semi-finals.
The Senior Women’s match between Puaikura and Matavera was no less exciting. Puaikura started strong, taking the lead early on, but Matavera, led by their young star Tearoa Rouru, responded with an equalizer, making the final score 1-1 at full-time. The match proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Matavera came out on top with a 4-2 victory, sending them through to the next round. It was a heartbreaking loss for Puaikura, but Matavera’s composure under pressure earned them the well-deserved win.
Over at Temurimotia Park, Puaikura faced Titikaveka in a battle of sheer determination and hunger to win. Puaikura came onto the field with intensity, eager to bounce back from their earlier setback. However, Titikaveka had a powerful opening, showing off their remarkable attacking skills to take the lead. Despite Titikaveka’s best efforts, Puaikura refused to back down and fought hard throughout the match. In the end, it was Puaikura’s resilience that paid off, securing the victory with a final score of 5-2. Puaikura will now face Tupapa Maraerenga—the team sitting in 1st place—in the upcoming semi-finals.
The Women’s match at Temurimotia Park saw Titikaveka face off against Nikao Sokattak in a game that was high on momentum and intensity. Titikaveka entered the match with strong attacking play and never looked back. Their dominant performance saw them overwhelm Nikao Sokattak, with the match ending in a commanding 7-1 victory for Titikaveka. Unfortunately, this result meant that Nikao Sokattak missed out on a spot in the semi-finals, but they can hold their heads high after a well-played tournament. Nikao Sokattak displayed impressive skills and sportsmanship throughout the competition, and we look forward to seeing them build on their performance in future tournaments.
From Takitumu Field to Temurimotia Park, the past week of CIFA Knockout action showcased a level of competition and passion that kept fans on the edge of their seats. While the penalty shootouts at Takitumu Field provided added drama, the fierce determination of the teams at Temurimotia Park was no less captivating. Every team, from the junior divisions to the senior squads, gave their best effort, and the tournament continues to be a celebration of football talent across all age groups.
With the knockout rounds now behind us, attention shifts to the semi-finals, which will begin this week.
