The pride of Cook Islands football is on the move. On Sunday night, the Cook Islands U16 Men’s National Football Team departed Rarotonga for Auckland, where they will link up with their overseas-based teammates before continuing their journey through Brisbane and on to Honiara, Solomon Islands, for the 2025 OFC U16 Men’s Championship.
This year’s tournament will see the Cook Islands competing in Group A alongside football heavyweights Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Tahiti. The opening challenge comes this Saturday, 16 August, when the boys take on Papua New Guinea at 3pm CKT. Next up is a clash against Fiji on Tuesday, 19 August, at 6pm CKT, followed by their final group match against Tahiti on Friday, 22 August, at 3pm CKT.
For half the squad, this will be their first-ever international football tournament, making the experience a milestone moment in their sporting journeys. The team’s preparation has been intense, with weeks of training focused on building chemistry, sharpening skills, and developing strategies to take on some of the region’s toughest sides.
The squad travelling to represent the Cook Islands includes Aiga Samania, Cassius Luu, Chris Pederson, Declan Paku, Eliakima Webb, Harold Rasmussen, Iseraela Ngaro, Jayden Angene, Jaydon Tua, Joseph Rua, Kimiora Ngametua, Kyanu Pauka, Maru Tereu, Maui Denny, Taianu Williams, Tearii Scheel, Temata Rouru, Tereuna Tekeu and Tuao Messine.
Leading the team is Head Coach George Ellis, supported by Assistant Coach Paavo Mustonen. Team Manager Teina Savage and Assistant Manager Jarves Aperau will handle off-field operations, while Goalkeepers Coach Tyson Tekeu prepares the shot-stoppers for action. Physiotherapist Sione Luianga rounds out the management team, ensuring the players are in peak condition throughout the tournament.
The team carries not only their own dreams but also the hopes of the Cook Islands football community, who will be cheering them on from home. Whether it is their first time on the international stage or a step toward bigger opportunities, this tournament promises unforgettable moments and valuable experience for every player.
