Given an intense first game on Friday, the Cook Islands National Football Women’s team went on the pitch heads high, skills ready and determined to make their mark in their first debut against Tonga.

Both sides clashed defensively, as both defenses were on high alert making it hard for each other, but player Lyric Davison saw the opportunity to score at second half and did exactly that, putting their score at 1-0 few minutes into the second half. But the Tongan side came back wanting to equalize the scores with in a high ball to the net minutes before full time.

Although facing a few challenges with girls, coming down with the flu, he is positive that they will still play with their hearts today. “Always nerves, anxiety, excitement, restlessness in game 1 of a big tournament, so we hope that’s all gone and the girls will focus on what they are good at” says Phillips.

Today the Cooks will play Samoa for their final decider, at 7pm FIJI time, at HBC Banks Stadium in Suva, Fiji.
