The Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) proudly hosted a successful FIFA Member Association (MA) Referees Course this past week, drawing over 20 dedicated referees from Rarotonga and the Outer Islands.
The five-day course was led by FIFA Instructor Mr. Jimmy Warai from Papua New Guinea, alongside CIFA’s own Referee Development Officer and FIFA Instructor, Mr. Rakesh Varman.
The course offered participants an intensive mix of classroom theory sessions and practical fieldwork, designed to strengthen their understanding of the game, decision-making, and application of the Laws of the Game.
Referees also undertook the full FIFA Fitness Test to assess their physical readiness, a key requirement for match officials at this level. The test was professionally conducted by CIFA and OFC Referees Fitness Instructor, Mr. John Pareanga.
In addition to their technical development, all referees were also issued brand-new referee gear through FIFA’s partnership with Adidas—an exciting and much-appreciated gesture that not only supports performance but also boosts confidence and unity among the group.
This course marked an important step forward in the ongoing development of Cook Islands referees. The strong turnout and enthusiasm from both Rarotonga-based and Pa Enua officials reflect the growing interest and commitment to high-quality officiating in our football community.
CIFA extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Jimmy Warai for sharing his expertise throughout the week, and a special meitaki maata to Rakesh Varman for coordinating the course with support from local Referee Instructors Uamaki Savage, Mata Iroa, and Laisa Gukisuva.
A big thank you also goes to the CIFA Management and Staff for their continuous support in developing referees across the nation. With programmes like this, the standard of officiating in the Cook Islands is set to reach new heights. Meitaki Maata!
