The Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) proudly recognises Mata Iroa, one of its longest-serving referees, who has recently completed the FIFA Instructors Course and is now officially one of CIFA’s latest MA Referee Instructors. This is an exciting development for local refereeing and a significant boost for women’s football in the Cook Islands.
Held in early May, the FIFA course brought together 20 participants from across Oceania to sharpen their teaching and mentoring skills — both on the field and in the classroom. Mata described the course as a valuable learning experience that introduced her to modern refereeing methods focusing on proactive decision-making, teamwork, and consistency.
“I’ve learned that I need to improve how I teach and guide referees here in the Cook Islands through modern assessment methods,” Mata said. “These new approaches will help raise the standard of officiating and build confidence among our referees, especially our women officials.”
Mata also expressed gratitude to CIFA and its Referee Development Officer/FIFA Instructor Rakesh Varman for their ongoing support, practical guidance, and encouragement, which made her participation possible.
Looking ahead, Mata is determined to share her knowledge to develop the next generation of referees. “I believe God has a purpose for me — to inspire others and help our women referees reach new levels in the game.”
Her appointment marks a positive step in growing women’s football with the assistance of Uamaki Savage & Robert Savage, who are active MA Referee Assessors & Instructors, and improving referee development across the country.
