Matavera took to the field a head strong team in their rumble with Nikao Sokattak on Saturday, which left the crowd in suspense until the last few minutes.
The Tower Insurance premier men’s teams, held through strong attacking from the Nikao side but Matavera’s defense brought their A game when taking on forwards like Marc Leito and Julius David, countering any balls going pass the half way mark. Matavera who were given multiple free kicks struggled to use that to their advantage while Nikao possessed most of the ball, but seemed to have trouble putting the ball behind David Piakura and his backline, which forced Nikao to reset their play and take on the Matavera side in a different manner.
After constant tussling in the mid-field and still no goals scored, the Nikao side made many attempts to score but the Matavera side was not letting them through to the back of the net, frustrated at the nil all score Nikao forwards used a throw in on Matavera’s half to slip a ball right through the feet of the Patrick Schneiders landing them their first goal in last 20 minutes of the match, then finding their way around the defenders, Nikao used that to land them another 3 goals ending their match at 4 nil.
In the match at CIFA Complex, the Avatiu side continued their wins in their match, captivating a 2-0 score against the Puaikura team. On Friday, Titikaveka came out victorious when playing Tupapa Maraerenga scoring a goal in the first half, then denying Tupapa their chances at any goals leaving them with a final score of 1-0.
In the Islander women’s side, Matavera women gave Nikao Sokattak a hard game to take over. Within the first 13 minutes of the game, Matavera’s Samantha Lockington took the chance given to her inside the box to push pass a kick that worried the Nikao side. But it didn’t take long for Nikao to come back, when a penalty inside the box executed well by Rima Browne put them at 1 all. But the teams, weighed out each other’s strengths and weakness leaving their scores at 1 all.
Puaikura and Avatiu ended their game in a 2-1 score, while on Thursday the ladies in black took with them another 3 points against Titikaveka, and a massive take with a score of 6-1.
