NIKAO’S PREMIER MEN OUT CLASSES AVATIU

A beautiful week and weekend blessed the first round of the football season as football teams hit the field for the first time since last year.

Nikao’s premier men opened their season with a 4-1 win over Avatiu on Saturday out playing them in the midfield and on the attack. Their speedy wingers were able to break through the Avatiu defense often and skillfully get the ball near the goal. The Avatiu defense were able to recover and shut down the Nikao attack many times however when they didn’t, goals were scored. The young Avatiu team were able to get one back near the end of the game but it was too late to make a comeback.

Nikao’s Senior women weren’t as clinical as their men’s team during their match against Avatiu failing to score, despite the many opportunities they had. Avatiu noticing their failure to score took advantage of this and made sure they reached the back of the net to edge forward and win the game 1-0.

At the opposite end of the island on Friday afternoon, the Titikaveka and Tupapa premier men fought in an exciting back and forth battle of goals before the hosts upset the 2018 champions four goals to three. Throughout the game it was unclear who would come out with the win as both teams would score one after the other. That is, until the dying minutes where a Titikaveka player curled the winning goal in from a free-kick near the goal line.

A day earlier, Titikaveka’s senior women’s team weren’t as lucky in their match falling to the Tupapa Senior women two goals to nil. The physical match saw many chances for both teams to score but it was the Tupapa side who found themselves reaching the back of the net and coming away with the win.

At the CIFA complex Puaikura premier men’s and senior women’s team started their season with convincing wins over Matavera FC with a score line of 4-0 and 10-0 respectively.
