Over the past four weeks, the Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) has been hosting the annual schools competition for students in years 7 and 8. This year’s tournament has seen seven schools from around Rarotonga participating, with students from Apii Nikao, Apii Avarua, Papaaroa School, Nukutere College, Apii Arorangi, Te Uki Au, and Titikaveka College all battling it out to become the winner of the 2024 Schools Competition.
The tournament, which has been running for several weeks, has seen the students train hard in preparation for the competition. The tournament features two categories – boys and girls teams – with the finals taking place today.
In the boys’ competition, Apii Avarua emerged as the winners, finishing in first place. The team displayed a strong performance throughout the tournament, securing their victory with a series of impressive matches. Apii Arorangi took second place, with Apii Nikao securing third place. The boys’ final showcased the high level of skill and competition among the young footballers.
In the girls’ competition, Nukutere College claimed victory, finishing in first place. The team showcased their strong attacking play and solid defense to secure their win. Apii Avarua took second place, once again demonstrating the strong football talent within the school. Apii Nikao finished in third place, with the team showing great determination and effort throughout the tournament.
The success of the schools competition has been a testament to the dedication and skill of the young footballers from around Rarotonga. The tournament has not only provided a platform for the students to showcase their talent but has also helped to develop their skills and love for the game. Looking ahead, CIFA is now preparing for next week’s tournament which will feature students in years 4, 5, and 6. The one-day competition will see the junior students from schools around Rarotonga invade the CIFA complex. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:30 am on Wednesday, April 27th. This tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of the next generation of Cook Islands football talent.
