The Rise of Women’s Football

Nestled within nearly 2 million square kilometers of vast ocean lie 15 tropical islands that make up the Cook Islands. With a combined land area of merely 236.7 square kilometers the Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) U13 Girls National Academy officially commenced this week at the CIFA complex, marking a major step for women’s football in the region.

Under the guidance of Jess Ibrom, the National Academy Director, and with the support of Youth Academy staff Ingrid Kelly and Teahi Wuatai, both incredible women young ready to hone their skills and strengthen their passion for the beautiful game.

The academy’s inception is part of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme—a vision that aims to give every talent a chance. As a long-term developmental strategy, the academy seeks to solidify CIFA’s commitment to nurturing talent, preparing players for potential international tournaments, and enhancing their overall competitiveness in the global football arena.

The timing could not have been more perfect. With the conclusion of the successful 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held close to our shores, awareness surrounding women’s football has never been higher. The rapid development and growth of football reveal promising opportunities for aspiring female athletes who wish to follow in the footsteps of legendary players. The launch of the U13 Girls Academy shines a spotlight on these ambitions by acknowledging and celebrating their potential.

Focusing primarily on girls below 13 years old, this new academy will provide enhanced accessibility to resources and training programs. Young talent from diverse backgrounds will benefit from expert coaching, strategic mentorship, invaluable networking opportunities and an inclusive environment that encourages them to learn new techniques while fostering a lifelong love for football.

The launch of this ambitious academy serves as a testament to CIFA’s commitment toward empowering women in sports and promoting gender equality both on and off the field. By investing in young talent today, we can look forward to a future generation of exceptional female athletes dominating international tournaments.

Despite a modest population of fewer than 10,000 inhabitants across the Cook Islands, CIFA stands as one of FIFA’s smallest Member Associations. Yet, the development and growth of football in this secluded paradise truly showcases the sport’s incredible reach and impact, even in the most remote corners of the world.

To reaffirm its commitment towards nurturing youth talent, CIFA is also set to kick off its Under 18 Men’s Academy this week. The second talent identification game for the U18 Men has also begun this week. Through such comprehensive initiatives, CIFA is paving the way for future generations of football stars and setting the stage for a brighter and more inclusive future in sports.
