Round 10 of the 2024 Rarotonga Round Cup was packed with excitement as teams across all divisions left everything on the field, delivering thrilling moments and some unexpected results. Fans were treated to intense battles, showcasing the competitiveness and passion of this year’s competition.
Last Saturday, main match of the week saw Puaikura FC take on Matavera-Ngatangiia at Raemaru Park. In the Premier Men’s Round Cup competition Puaikura and Matavera-Ngatangiia secured an equalizer in a match that showcased intense competition from start to finish. Both teams battled fiercely for possession, with the midfield turning into a key battleground as each side sought to control the tempo.
Matavera drew first blood in the 37th second right after kick off when midfielder Alphy Ngire pounced on a well-placed through ball to George Ellis who calmly put the ball at the back of the net. A misjudged clearance from Puaikura’s defense allowed the ball to fall perfectly into Ellis’s path, and he made no mistake, firing it past the keeper to give Matavera a 1-0 lead. However,Matavera’s midfield core, consisting of Jay Jay Osinamo and Mark Leito, remained resilient and composed. They kept possession well and frustrated Puaikura by cutting off passing lanes and slowing down their momentum. Their work rate and ability to control the ball in tight spaces allowed Matavera to build from the back and push forward with intent.
Puaikura refused to back down and continued to search for a way back into the game. Their persistence paid off in the 12th minute in the second half when JJ Karika delivered a perfectly weighted through ball from the center, allowing Oscar Wichman to make a well-timed run into the box and finish with precision, narrowing the score to 1-1. Puaikura’s midfield duo, Nathan Tisam and JJ Karika, worked tirelessly to regain control for their side, breaking up Matavera’s play and initiating quick transitions forward. Tisam, in particular, was a standout performer for Puaikura, displaying composure and vision as he tried to link up with the forwards and orchestrate attacks.
In the final ten minutes, both teams threw everything forward in search of a victory. Quick counterattacks and a flurry of crosses from the wings tested both team’s defences, but Matavera’s backline, bolstered by coach Ronnie Sakai and goalkeeper Kenneth Rota, held firm. Both team’s ability to stay composed under pressure allowed them to see out the game and secure a hard-fought equalizer. The Senior Women teams of Puaikura and Matavera-Ngatangiia clashed in an exhilarating showdown. The game showcased outstanding talent and fierce competition, keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the match.
The encounter saw remarkable performances from key players, with Maeva Carr shining as she scored Matavera’s first goal, skillfully assisted by Talei. The crowd erupted in cheers as the teamwork between Maeva and Talei resulted in a stunning goal, setting the stage for an electrifying game. However, Matavera-Ngatangiia proved to be a formidable opponent, displaying exceptional skill and determination. Puaikura pushed hard for a late goal, but Matavera’s composure at the back and a few crucial interventions from goalkeeper Kimberly ensured they held on to their 1-0 lead, sealing a well-earned victory. Puaikura, however, didn’t give up easily. Midfielders Esther Potoru and Stephanie Nooroa were instrumental in trying to dictate the pace of the game, switching play and looking to unlock Matavera’s defence. They kept the ball moving well in midfield, creating opportunities, but Matavera’s backline and goalkeeper remained solid, clearing out any danger that came their way.As the second half progressed, Puaikura increased the pressure, particularly through their strikers, Victoria Fatiaki and Poko Tuariki, who looked to exploit gaps in Matavera’s defense. In the 25thminute, it came to fulfillment as Poko Tuariki found the opportunity to score by passing 2 Matavera defenders and drawing the goalkeeper out, creating an equalizer on the scoreboard.
Despite Puaikura’s impressive efforts, Matavera-Ngatangiia managed to secure another thrilling goal assisted with a perfect long ball by Manine Lynch to Maeva Carr as she strucks the ball into the net, ultimately ending with a final score of 1-2. At Victoria Park, Tupapa Maraerenga Premier Mens defeated Nikao Sokattak 3-0 in a tightly contested Premier Men’s match. The game was marked by robust defensive performances from both sides, making it difficult to score.
In the 20th minute after kick-off, striker Marcus Gibbens found the ball at the back of the net, putting Tupapa in the lead. Despite their endless efforts, 10 minutes before half-time, Tupapa was given a penalty by the referee due to a reckless tackle caused by Nikao. Paavo Mustonen, stood up to the plate adding another point to the scoreboard for Tupapa. In the second half, Tupapa’s Teina Savage and Avi Enoka were standout performers, delivering strong defensive play and Grover Harmon contributing creatively in the midfield. Tupapa Maraerenga’s wide forwards, Tahitoa Webb and Ngametua Tuakana, were instrumental in their attacking strategy. Their ability to spread Nikao’s defense and create space was crucial throughout the match allowing Marcus Gibbens to find the ball once again and place it at the back of the net.
Nikao Sokattak ramped up the intensity as they regained the lead throughout the second halfwhen key players Owen Matapo and Maeva Mateariki fought to get the ball down the line and into Tupapa’s turf. The match continued to be tightly contested, with both teams creating chances and battling for control in the midfield. Nikao’s performance was commendable, as their defense worked tirelessly to contain Tupapa’s attacks, particularly the pace and threat posed by Stephen Willis and Leo Smith. Nikao’s midfield also played a key role in disrupting Tupapa’s rhythm, forcing them to work hard for every opportunity. In the Senior Women’s match, Tupapa Maraerenga’s team delivered a commanding performance, dominating Nikao Sokattak with a decisive 11-0 victory. Jan Taia was in top form, netting a hat trick, demonstrating her sharp finishing ability in front of the goal as well as experienced player Mii Savage also scoring a hat trick. Cjay Rimamotu and Abrihana Enoka also contributed with two goals each, showcasing the depth of Tupapa’s attacking options. Throughout the match, Tupapa’s attacking play was relentless, as they effectively combined quick passing between the midfield and wide forwards, consistently creating space and opportunities which came into fulfillment as Tupou Brogan places their final match-goal into the net. Despite Nikao’s best efforts, including a pressing game that aimed to disrupt Tupapa’s rhythm and quick counterattacks that sought to exploit any gaps, they were unable to break through Tupapa’s organized defense or convert their chances into goals. Despite the loss, Nikao’s spirited display and tactical discipline were evident throughout the match, reflecting their growth and potential in the competition.
Meanwhile, at the CIFA Complex on Friday, Avatiu FC took on Titikaveka FC in what proved to be a tightly contested Premier Men’s match. Avatiu opened the scoring in the first half, with Poninifinding the back of the net after a well-worked team play. The Avatiu team came hungry to win as they showed outstanding performance by scoring another 2 goals in the first half. Titikaveka, eager to keep their fans happy, responded with determination as Rua Oti placed their first goal in the second half. After endless efforts from both teams, Avatiu secured a 3-1 victory over Titikaveka. The match was a battle of nerves and precision, with both teams creating chances.
In the Senior Women’s match, the Titikaveka team delivered an outstanding performance. It was Kimberley Tangirere who opened the match score for Titikaveka with a nicely paced long ball from their captain Penina Katuke. In the second half, Avatiu stepped up their game from the previous matches, giving Titikaveka a tough challenge, but ultimately, neither team could break through the other’s defense line, concluding with a final score of 1-0 to Titikaveka.
The weekend wrapped up a week of intense and skillful football across all divisions.
