TUPAPA PREMIER MEN OUT CLASSES NIKAO
A beautiful week and weekend blessed the first round of the football season as football teams hit the field for the first time since last year.
Tupapa’s premier men overcame Nikao with a 1-0 win on Saturday out playing them in the midfield and on the attack. Tupapa’s Paavo Mustonen was able to break through the Nikao defense and skillfully get the ball in the nets. The Nikao defense were able to recover and shut down the Tupapa attack many times however no goals were scored on their end. The young Nikao team were able to hold the scores until the final whistle was blown.
Nikao’s Senior women weren’t as clinical as their men’s team during their match against Tupapa with both teams failing to score, despite the many opportunities they had. An injury from the Nikao forced the game to come to a tie of 0-0.
At the opposite end of the island on Friday afternoon, the Titikaveka and Matavera Ngatangiia Senior Women fought in an exciting back and forth battle of goals before Titikaveka upset Matavera with three goals to 2 . Throughout the game it was unclear who would come out with the win as both teams would score one after the other. Meanwhile in the Premier Men’s division later that afternoon Titikaveka came out as the winners with a final score of 5-0.
A day earlier, Avatiu’s senior women’s and Premier Men’s team weren’t as lucky in their matches falling to the Puaikura women two goals to one, whilst the Premier Men overcame the host 7 goals to 2. The physical match saw many chances for both teams to score but it was the Puaikura side who found themselves reaching the back of the net and coming away with the win.
