Nikao win wraps up Primary School soccer

Nikao caused an upset on Wednesday beating Avatea by three goals to two in the final of the Senior Primary School soccer tournament.
Nikao went into the game with confidence after their thrilling 5-4 win over last year’s champs, Arorangi last week. Nikao wasted no time, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of their game sending the teachers and supporters into a cheery celebration.
But Avatea heads did not drop as they leveled before the half time whistle thanks to goals from a free kick and penalty kick. The teachers and supporters came alive and had plenty more to cheer about.
When it looked to be another penalty shoot-out finish, Nikao scored their third and winning goal through a corner kick. Avatea threw everything at Nikao in the last five minutes but the Nikao side held their nerve in what was a thrilling finish to claim their first title.
Emotions ran high after the match as Nikao celebrated their win.
In the girl’s division, the Avarua side remains champions for another year despite a nil all draw in their final game on Wednesday against Avatea. Avarua remained unbeaten all through the Round Robin games to finish top of the table with thirteen points followed by Avatea on eight points and Nikao in third placing.
The afternoon’s match did not provide as much goalmouth excitement but there was no shortage of drama as Avarua and Avatea tried to find the back of the net in an absorbing contest.
Cook Islands Football would like to congratulate Nikao and Avarua on their win and taking the 2011 Senior Primary School title.
