2026 Rarotonga Football Season Begins Today with Exciting Opening Fixtures

The 2026 Rarotonga Football Season officially gets underway today, Wednesday 15 July, with the island’s Grassroots and U18 Men’s competitions opening what promises to be another exciting campaign for Cook Islands football.

After weeks of preparation by clubs, players, coaches and volunteers, football returns to fields across Rarotonga this afternoon as six clubs—Avatiu FC, Matavera-Ngatangiia FC, Nikao-Sokattak FC, Puaikura FC, Titikaveka FC and Tupapa-Maraerenga FC—begin their quest for success in the new season.

The afternoon’s action starts at 4:15pm at the CIFA Complex, where the Grassroots divisions will once again provide an exciting showcase of the next generation of Cook Islands football talent. The U6, U8, U10 and U12 Mixed age groups will all take to the field simultaneously, with young footballers eager to represent their clubs in the opening round.

Across each Grassroots division, Avatiu FC will face Tupapa-Maraerenga FC, Matavera-Ngatangiia FC will meet Titikaveka FC, while Nikao-Sokattak FC takes on Puaikura FC. The Grassroots programme remains one of the most important pillars of football development in the Cook Islands, providing children with opportunities to build confidence, develop fundamental football skills and learn important values such as teamwork, respect and sportsmanship in a fun and supportive environment.

Attention will then shift to the U18 Men’s division, where three highly anticipated matches kick off at 4:30pm across the island. Tupapa-Maraerenga FC begin their campaign at the CIFA Complex against Avatiu FC in what is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the opening round.

At Takitumu Field, Matavera-Ngatangiia FC hosts neighbours Titikaveka FC in what promises to be a competitive encounter between two clubs eager to build momentum from the outset. Local pride will be on the line, with both sides aiming to secure valuable points in the opening week of the competition.

Meanwhile, at Nikao Field, Nikao-Sokattak FC welcomes Puaikura FC in another intriguing contest. The U18 Men’s competition continues to serve as an important pathway for the country’s emerging footballers, with many players progressing into senior club football and national representative programmes. The league has consistently showcased some of the Cook Islands’ brightest young talent, making it one of the most exciting competitions on the domestic football calendar.

The Cook Islands Football Association welcomes players, coaches, match officials, volunteers and supporters back for another season and encourages the community to get behind their local clubs throughout the competition.
