A group of new and existing referees on Aitutaki have been brought together this week to take part in a FIFA Refereeing course at the AFA technical centre in Vaipae.
A total of 20 participants are involved in the five-day course which is being facilitated by FIFA instructor, John Gia with the assistance of OFC technical director, Neil Poloso and CIFA referee development officer, Maara Kaukura.
The course started on Monday with the opening ceremony attended by the CIFA president, Lee Harmon.
Following his address to the group Mr. Harmon declared the course opened and participants proceeded into a session on the amendments to the Laws of the Game.
Over the next three-days the course would have provided the referees with better understanding on the concept of making technical and tactical analysis through various topics, interpreting and applying the new changes to the LOTG and be able to carry out the new fitness test with other alternatives.
The participants will need to complete two practical sessions, a fitness test and a number of theory sessions educating on fouls and misconduct, positioning and movement, off-sides and handball incidents.
So far into Day two of the course, CIFA referee development officer, Maara Kaukura says he is positive the participants are keen to learn and have shown enthusiasm from the start.
“It was satisfying for to hear that they were asking questions about the new changes to the laws of the game. That tells me they are keen to learn more.
The course will end on Friday with a presentation of certificates to all the participants.
