Apii Nikao 2017 Origin Gas Champions

The Origin Gas senior primary school tournament saw Apii Nikao take top honours in both the girls and boys division on Wednesday.

In what was described to be an exciting and intense tournament it was safe to say the level of skills brought onto the pitch by the youngsters has improved significantly from previous years, producing some very entertaining matches for parents and supporters who gathered for the event.

What was exciting was the fact that all podium place getters in both the boys and girl’s division was won in twinning style so to speak by Apii Nikao, Apii Avarua and Papaaroa.

All participating schools were drawn into pools where three round of games were played with the top two final placed teams fought it out in the playoffs to book their spot in the final.

A huge turnout not only by the participating schools but by the parents and families of all the children who were playing and those who were there just to support their schools.

The final round games in the girls division saw Apii Nikao square off against rvials Apii Avarua. Both teams wanting to claim top honours for their school however making it very difficult for each side to put one in the back of the net. Several goal scoring opportunities were a-foot and the rest of the match was a tit-for-tat battle with both ends on their best guard of defence.

At the final whistle Apii Nikao and Apii Avarua were goalless and a penalty shootout took place to determine the winner for 2017.  Both on equal goals of 1-all with the last kick to come from Apii Nikao and much to the excitement from onlookers the final kick was a success sending the team players and supporters into an uproar of cheering to claim the 2017 Origin Gas Senior Primary School Girl’s division.

As if the girls’ final wasn’t entertaining enough, it was the creative flair and skilful play in the boys’ finals that put on a great show for everyone. The highly-skilled Avarua School took on a competitive side from Apii Nikao, and if you were not watching the game, the audible cheers from either sides of the pitch was enough to say the match was thrilling and intense. Both teams respectively carried their fair share of talented players.  At the final whistle both sides were locked at one goal apiece.

Like their counterparts, a penalty shootout took place to determine the winner and Apii Nikao were too slick for Apii Avarua’s goalkeeper to slot through all five of their goals over their opponents four goals to claim the 2017 Origin Gas Senior Primary School Boy’s division.

Following the final matches the presentation of trophies was conducted and presented by CIFA’s Technical Director, Jess Ibrom and Development Officer, Tahiri Elikana.
