National U20s Men’s Team Set For Tonga

The Rarotonga-based players and officials will stay in Auckland for two days where they will be joined by our New Zealand and Australia contingents, and play one friendly match against an Ellerslie Football Club team before departing on Saturday 18th June for Tonga.
The Cook Islands will be playing three matches against the host nation Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa, with their prime objective to win the tournament and progress onto the second stage of the OFC U20 Championship which will be held in Vanuatu in September.
“Winning this competition is our ultimate goal if we are looking ahead to Vanuatu,” said national coach Tuka Tisam.
“I am going in with confidence our team will perform well in Tonga.”
The Cook Islands will play their first match against host team Tonga, following the opening match between Samoa and American Samoa on Day One of the competition set for Tuesday 21st June.
“We are going in with the expectation that all of the teams will be tough and physical,” said Tisam.
“The boys have been preparing well and hard for this competition and I think with the added experience coming from our overseas contingent of players we can achieve the result we are aiming for.”
The national team departs this afternoon on Air New Zealand Flight NZ45 for Auckland at 04:40PM.
