Strong Start For Tupapa With Victory Over Veitongo FC

While the opening match of the tournament between Kiwi FC and American Samoa’s Utulei FC displayed some enthralling knocks and set pieces, it was the Tupapa Maraerenga’s organised game play and winning result that impressed a home crowd at the CIFA Complex.
Tupapa Captain Mii Joseph was pleased with his team’s performance noting that they had achieved their set objectives for their first game.
“We accomplished a lot of goals that we talked about during camp.
“I think we played our best and we achieved better than what we expected.”
The Joseph-skippered team wasted no time on the field scoring their first goal seven minutes into the game and came away with a total of 4-0 at the half time whistle.
Topscorer of the match went to Tupapa’s Jared Colligan who contributed four goals to the score line, followed by speedster Harlem Simiona with two and another by Twin Tiro.
Reflected in their drubbing result it was clear Tupapa was in control of the play throughout the match. A frustrated Tonga side struggled to keep up with the wide play by the host team causing them a number of defaults in the game.
“We expected Tonga to come out strong but I think with the quality of our plays we were hungrier for the win.”
With a good head start into the tournament it is back to the drawing board for Joseph and his team who will need to recuperate and eliminate mistakes in time for their next encounter. They will face the experienced Kiwi FC on Thursday.
“We watched a couple of their plays today and they will be a strong team to beat but we’ll just leave that as it is and prepare ourselves for them.”
Whether the same game plan will remain for Tupapa, Joseph said his team will play each match with caution and “an eager-to-win” spirit.
To celebrate their win for the day Tupapa would like to pay homage to its sponsors and supporters who came out to the field to cheer the team on.
Today will be a rest day for all teams and games will resume again tomorrow afternoon. Tupapa Maraerenga FC will challenge Kiwi FC in the final game of the day which will kick off at 5:00PM, following the opening match between Utulei FC and Veitongo FC at 2:30PM.
