The Atiu football club five-a-side season got underway last week at Teenui sports field, with a number of matches setting the tone for an exciting competition ahead.
Plenty of football action was delivered at the season opener on Friday bringing together the whole island community for a fun-filled afternoon.
The tournament will carry into December with six determined teams competing in four divisions, Under 8 Mixed, Under 16 Boys and Girls, senior women and Open Men.
Football being the most popular sport on the island, the competition kicked off to a brilliant start with huge interest shown through the high level of participation from members of the wide community including government service workers.
Atiu FC president Tereapii Porio was excited to kick-start the season again this year noting it is a much anticipated competition on the island.
“Football is the number one sport here and it was pleasing for me to see there was still a huge interest for the game,” he said.
“From what we saw at the first lot of games on Friday, I am already forecasting a tough and competitive season.”
Matches are played on a weekly basis attracting a majority of the island’s population to the Teenui sports field.
Atiu Football Club is one of the member associations under the Cook Islands Football Association umbrella.
