Seventy children from around Rarotonga were taught how to make healthy choices at the ever-popular Just Play Village Festival held at the Pa Ariki Palace grounds in Ngatangiia on Tuesday.
The Just Play Village Festival encourages all children to take up 60 minutes of daily physical activity, and to make long-term lifestyle changes so that nutrition, sports and fitness become part of their everyday routine.
The sports day was held to coincide with a plan organised by Pa Ariki to get people active.
Youngsters aged from five to 13 years took part in sports ranging from football, cricket, badminton, netball, gymnastics and athletics. Parents also turned out to watch their children take part in the events. Organisers declared it a great day out for school children, who enjoyed taking part in a variety of sports.
With the theme of “Beat Diabetes”, the day was split between competitive and leisure events aimed at encouraging children to be active.
Children were given hands-on lessons concerning nutrition, portion sizes, fitness through exercise, and enjoying food wisely. The lessons were provided by Ministry of Health Representative Karen Tairea
