Junior footballers set to battle

The one-day football tournament for primary school Grades 4, 5 and 6 will kick off at 8.45am tomorrow morning at the CIFA Complex in Matavera.

All primary schools around Rarotonga have put together boys, girls and mixed teams to battle it out for prizes while showcasing their skills against each other. They will compete in four divisions: B Boys, B Girls, B Mix and C Mix.

The schools participating in the event are Takitumu, Avarua, St Joseph, Apii Nikao, Arorangi, Rutaki, Papaaroa College, Imanuela Akatemia and Te Uki Ou.

The annual competition will give CIFA’s technical department the opportunity to identify and select players to participate in its development programmes. It will also give those who do not necessarily play the game at club level the chance to enjoy football.

The winning schools from last year’s tournament were Apii Nikao in the B boys division, Avarua in the B girls division, Rutaki in the B mixed division and Arorangi in the C mixed division.

They will no doubt be set on defending their titles, but past tournaments have seen strong competition from all participating schools and tomorrow’s contest may see some new winners.

Parents, teachers and spectators are expected to turn up in numbers to watch fun football games amongst future stars who will be determined to win the cup that is up for the taking.

The first game is scheduled to kick off at 8.45am, with the final matches finishing at 2pm. The presentation of trophies will be held straight after the final games.

To all supporters and parents, come on down and show your support for your child, school and enjoy some football.
