Cook Islands 2017 Champions Tupapa Maraerenga will represent the Cook Islands at the OFC Champions League Preliminary Tournament in American Samoa.The squad of 11 Rarotonga based players plus three officials will depart tonight and will be met by seven New Zealand based players in Auckland before departing for Amerian Samoa via Apia.
The tournament will start on the 20th of January with games against the champion clubs from Samoa (Lupe Ole Soaga FC), Tonga (Veitonga FC) and host American Samoa (Pago Youth FC).
The team came together over the weekend for final preparations with a training session held at the CIFA Complex in Matavera. Tupapa Maraerenga FC is scheduled to arrive in Pago Pago on Tuesday.
Cook Islands champions Tupapa Maraerenga will play its first game against Lupe Ole Soaga on Friday. This game will set the pace for the tournament. A win by either team will put them on the right track to qualify for stage two of the OFC Champions League.
The American Samoa Football Association is poised to host the Qualifers this year and will be ecstatic to kick-off the tournament over the weekend. On Friday at 2:00pm local time Tupapa Maraerenga will come up against Samoa’s champions Lupe Ole Soaga at the Pago Park Soccer Stadium.
