Cook’s to play Waitakere United

It will be a battle of David and Goliath, in one corner is New Zealand’s semi-professional side Waitakere United taking on our Cook Islands ‘Selection’. Most of the Cook Islands ‘Selection’ players play in the local amateur league here on Rarotonga, however, the team will include three to four players currently playing in New Zealand’s and Australia’s domestic competitions.
Waitakere United represents a vast area of central and west Auckland, delivering the very best in domestic football. Waitakere United has been witness to many highlights and many trophies including numerous National league and Chatham Cup titles, New Zealand national cup.
Waitakere United are a competitive top side playing in the O-League competition organized by Oceania Football Confederation. They have held the O League title and Championship for two consecutive years in 2007 and 2008. This qualified them for their debutant playoff for the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup held in Japan.
They played the likes of Iranian club, Sepahan and South American’s giants Corinthians and went away with the experience of playing top level football in the previous club championship thus gaining plenty of international experience.
The coach of Waitakere is Neil Emblen who spent twelve years as a professional player in the English Football League. He made over three hundred and fifty appearances at clubs such as Millwall, Wolves, Cristal Palace, Norwich City and Walsall. Neil completed his playing career in New Zealand featuring for the NZ Knights and Waitakere United.
Waitakere United is the current New Zealand Champion’s for 2010/2011 football season.
