Avarua School New Soccer Champs

In what was described to be an exciting and intense tournament it was safe to say the level of skills brought onto the pitch by the youngsters has improved significantly from previous years, producing some very entertaining matches for parents and supporters who gathered for the event.
The final round games in the girls division saw Avarua School go head-to-head with Nukuture College. Both teams were up-to-scratch with their play making it very difficult for each side to put one in the back of the net. But it was a power kick from just outside the penalty area that gave Nukutere a one-up lead against their opponents in the first half. The rest of the match was a tit-for-tat battle with both ends on their best guard of defence. However, stepping up with their game plan was Avarua who retaliated to not only equalize the score but take the win home with another goal from inside the penalty area in the dying minutes of the second half. The end result won Avarua the championship title for 2016 with their final score of two goals to one. Although Avarua was dominant throughout the competition Nukutere was the only team to score a goal against the champions.
As if the girls’ final wasn’t entertaining enough, it was the creative flair and skilful play in the boys’ finals that put on a great show for everyone. The highly-skilled Avarua School took on a competitive side from Papaaroa, and if you were not watching the game, the audible cheers from either sides of the pitch and from the grandstand was enough to say the match was thrilling and interesting. Both teams respectively carried their fair share of talented players but it was the incredible all-round teamwork produced by the Avarua side that won them their championship title. The full time score was five goals to nil.
Following these matches the presentation of trophies was conducted and presented by sponsor Origin Gas Cook Islands’ Country Manager Claude Simpson, CIFA’s President Lee Harmon and Vice Tangi Tereapii.
