Cook Islands Football Association Technical Director Matt Campbell has completed Block 1 of the prestigious OFC A Licence coaching programme in Fiji, taking another important step in his professional coaching journey.
The achievement marks a significant milestone not only for Campbell personally, but also for the continued development of football coaching in the Cook Islands.
Campbell, who serves as CIFA’s Technical Director, was accepted into the Oceania Football Confederation’s OFC A Licence programme earlier this year. The qualification is one of the highest coaching awards available through the Oceania Football Confederation and is designed to further develop coaches working in advanced and elite football environments.
The first block of the course, held in Fiji during August, brought together coaches from across the Oceania region and provided an opportunity for participants to develop their understanding of the modern game while sharing knowledge and experiences with fellow coaches.
For Campbell, the course represents another stage in an ongoing commitment to coach education and professional development.
As Technical Director, Campbell has an important role in shaping the future of football in the Cook Islands. His responsibilities extend beyond the development of players, with coach education and creating stronger development pathways forming an important part of CIFA’s long-term football strategy.
OFC has previously highlighted the importance of coach education across the Pacific, with coaches undertaking higher-level licences expected to use their increased knowledge and experience to help develop players, teams and other coaches.
That philosophy is particularly relevant to the Cook Islands, where continued investment in coaching can have a significant impact across the local football community.
Campbell’s progression through the OFC A Licence pathway also comes at a time when CIFA is placing greater emphasis on developing its coaching workforce. In May, CIFA highlighted the progress being made through coach education initiatives, including Campbell’s acceptance into the A Licence programme. The Cook Islands Technical Director is no stranger to coach development with previous AFC, OFC, and USSAF coaching qualifications.
Completing Block 1 now provides Campbell with another valuable learning experience that can be taken back to Rarotonga and incorporated into CIFA’s wider coaching and player-development programmes.
The benefits of such a qualification can extend well beyond the individual coach. The knowledge gained can be shared with local coaches, helping to raise coaching standards and provide players with better-quality training environments.
For a small island football nation, developing people within the game is crucial to building a sustainable pathway from grassroots football through to national teams.
Campbell’s achievement therefore represents more than simply another qualification on his coaching résumé. It is another investment in the knowledge, leadership and technical expertise available within Cook Islands football.
With Block 1 now completed, Campbell will continue working towards the completion of the OFC A Licence, bringing the experience and knowledge gained along the way back to the Cook Islands and helping contribute to the continued growth of the game at home.
