The blue skies greeted the many youth football players and faithfuls to an exciting and talent-filled day of football. The much awaited Kia Orana Youth Football Festival finally got underway at the CIFA complex on Saturday.
Some can say that these moderate weather conditions without a doubt influenced the end result of several matches nevertheless day one of the festival did not fail to produce a series of captivating matches.
In the opening game of the day, in the under 16 girl’s division in Pool A, Aitutaki scored a late goal to snatch a 2-1 win over Avatiu FC who tried to break the defence wall of Aitutaki to equalize however time was not on their side as the young ladies and supporters from Aitutaki celebrated their first win.
Visiting NZ club, Beachlands Fury showing their experience and composure capitalizing on all opportunities created securing their first win against Mauke. While Tupapa Maraerenga scoring early against Mangaia, Mangaia replied to bring the score at level showing a glimpse of brilliance however Tupapa Maraerenga outclassed them by maintaining pressure through their game. Takitumu Royales faced the Ellerslie Mustangs in the last of the under 16 girl’s division and the Mustangs too slick for the Royales clinching their first win for the festival.
The first of the under 16 boy’s division games match produced an intense but beautifully played football for these lads however it was a determined Takitumu Pirates that pulled through however late in the second half to defeat Tupapa Maraerenga by one goal to nil.
The young men from the wild-west Puaikura meant business as they faced Mangaia, taking home for them 5-0 and to close day one’s football action Mauke and Aitutaki did not disappoint those who remained at the CIFA complex to cheer them on.
Mauke and Aitutaki supporters both seated and both ends of the CIFA grandstand and each time a play was made or a sign of a goal coming both ends of the grandstand would erupt and much to the delight of the supporters from Mauke whose under 16 boys defeated Aitutaki by three goals to nil.
With goals being spread across the day, today’s schedule will be highly contested. To open today’s event from Pool A – Under 16 Girl Aitutaki will battle it out against Mangaia at 8.20am followed by Mauke and Ellerslie Mustangs at 9.30am.
For sure all teams contesting in day twos fiesta will bring their A-game and ensure a 3-point is added to their tally to guarantee a top two spot in their pool and taking them closer to the silverware for the 2017 Kia Orana Youth Football Festival.
