Cook Islands football has ventured into new territory with a newly promoted national men’s and women’s soccer tournament launching in April. The tournament shines the spotlight on Rarotonga and the outer islands, as it will bring together the best football talent from around the Cook Islands.
The eight day event is set to take off from April 14 to 21 at the CIFA Complex and Takitumu school grounds in Matavaera as well as Teimurimotia Park in Titikaveka.
“The national senior men’s and women’s tournament promises to bring unprecedented excitement and entertainment to soccer fans across the Cook Islands.” said CIFA Competitions Manager Pauline Dean.
Participating teams in the senior men’s and women’s tournament for 2018 are Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Mitiaro, Mauke, Avarua, Takitumu and Puaikura.
It is therefore clearly a tournament of local stars and it will be exciting to see which new names will emerge from the competition this year.
The eight sides will be drawn into two groups (Group A and Group B) each containing four teams, who will play one another on a round-robin basis. The top two sides in each group then advance to the semifinals.
The association is excited to launch the inaugural event calling it the “first of its kind” on the island and anticipates an exhilarating experience for both the participants and the locals.
