Puaikura and Nikao Sokattack battle to a tie

Defending champions Puaikura rallied back from a one goal deficit to tie with Nikao Sokattack in the match of the week for round three of the 2017 Rarotonga football season. Faithful fans of both teams were treated to an exciting tooth and nail contest. In the end, after 90 minutes of constant action and plenty of running at the Nikao field, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The first score happened quickly with Nikao Sokattack finding the back of the net early in the first period, they scored and capitilized on a foul awarded in the box resulting from an illegal tackle committed by a Puaikura defender.

Puaikura immediately picked themselves up and sprung into action trying to push for a tying goal. They were hot on attack for the remainder of the first half. Nikao Goalkeeper made several highlight reel saves as Puaikua delivered lasers on goal. Nikao took their slender lead into the break.

The second half of the match was fairly even, although Puaikura began to show their control over the hosts towards the end of the period – with possession relatively even. The defensive effort and intensity were present from start to finish. The frustration was audible of Nikao Sokattack fans as Puaikura continued to drive them back and several of their players were being flagged with yellow cards.

Puaikura completed the comeback with a last-gasp goal. The Puaikura team sealed the match with nearly three quarters of the game gone by smashing in a powerful strike coming off an assist.

The draw with Puaikura could turn out to be a pivotal moment for Nikao Sokattacks intent for this season. Coach Tahiri Elikana hopes the team can learn from the frustrations of Saturday’s 1-1 tie.

In the other premeir men’s match Takuvaine survived an early scare from Titikaveka who scored two goals in the first half but were able to make a spectacular comeback victory with a scoreline of 6-3. Matavera and Avatiu fought to a nil all tie.
