Sokattak wins 2-1 on the road

The Nikao Sokattak premier men’s team went on the road and picked up a big win on Saturday as they defeated Avatiu 2-1 in a hard-fought match at the Avatiu Sports Field.


Nikao Sokattak wasted no time as Manase Unuia scored on a corner and put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage four minutes into the first half. Previously Nikao Had two shots at goal, but Avatiu’s defense was able to contain them.

Not long after, Manase got on the end of a Julius David corner kick, but his deft one-touch just dipped over the cross bar.

Atu Putere for Avatiu was awarded a free kick, but this was defended by Nikao in the 15th minute.

In the 29th minute, Nikao Sokattak were called for a handball inside the box, which set Avatiu up with a penalty kick. Campbell Best stepped up to the penalty marker and put the ball into the back of the net to level the score 1-1.

Avatiu took another shot in the 40th minute with a header by Campbell Best that was sent over the post.

Julius David continued his good start to the season as he found the back of the net in the 42nd minute of play with a nicely driven ball that handed Nikao Sokattak the lead, 2-1.

Nikao Sokattak enjoyed more of the possession throughout the final 45 minutes and created plenty of top-shelf scoring chances.

Avatiu kept pressuring for the remainder of the contest but just couldn’t find the back of the net, leaving Nikao Sokattak to walk away with maximum points as the game ended 2-1 to Nikao Sokattak.

In the other premier men’s matches, Tupapa Maraerenga cruised to a 6-0 win over Titikaveka. Meanwhile, Matavera came up with an upset in their mid-week clash, defeating Puaikura 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

In the Island senior women’s division, Avatiu handed Nikao Sokattak their first loss of the season, winning that match 1-0, while Puaikura recorded their first win, defeating Matavera 2-0, and Titikaveka and Tupapa Maraerenga ended their game with a scoreless tie.
