Tupapa Maraerenga ends Puaikura’s unbeaten run

Tupapa Maraerenga ended Puaikura’s winning streak at the CIFA Complex on Saturday, defeating the defending champions 2-0 for their first ever encounter this year.

It was Puaikura’s first loss after 20 games dating back to the 2016 football season. A lively opening three minutes of the game revealed the attacking and direct style of play that both Tupapa Maraerenga and Puaikura had on the agenda. Both sides had good spells of possession with some half chances which went mostly in Tupapa Maraerenga’s favour.

It took just five minutes for Tupapa Maraerenga to hit the front with a superbly executed goal, the skipper Mii Joseph spotting Grover Harmon’s run and delivering a perfectly weighted pass which allowed the midfielder to control and tap the ball pass the goalkeepers reach and into the net. Puaikura managed to have a couple of opportunites thanks to counter attacks, but Kimiora Samuela couldn’t put away their chances.

It took only twenty five minutes into the second half for the lead to be doubled. A beautiful cross from Campbell Best allowed Ivan Smith to slot the ball into the goal area to increase the scoreline.
The second goal demolished Puaikura’s confidence, with mistakes occuring all over the pitch.

In a fantastic, open and enjoyable match, Tupapa Maraerenga showed their class and deserved the victory. With some amazing individual performances, and stunning teamwork play, Tupapa Maraerenga could be the team to beat in this competition.
